How to get a medical certificate when you’re too sick to go out

14 Jun 2023

When you're too sick to leave your home, getting a medical certificate can seem like a daunting task.

With the introduction of telehealth services, it’s now possible to get a medical certificate online without physically visiting the GP so you can stay home and focus on getting better.

Is an online medical certificate the same as a regular medical certificate?

Yes, an online medical certificate is the same as a regular one as long as it is issued by a registered and licenced medical practitioner who follows the Medical Board of Australia’s guidelines for online consultations. All Our Sage doctors and nurse practitioners are licenced, registered and experienced in providing online medical certificates that meet all the necessary legal requirements.

Can I trust an online doctor?

With Our Sage you can easily request a telehealth consultation through the Our Sage app or website and access our network of experienced, Australian-registered GPs. Every Our Sage telehealth doctor is Australian-licenced, AHPRA-registered and experienced in treating a wide range of medical conditions in person, or via telehealth. *Please note medical cerificates can also be issued by a qualified and registered nurse practitioner.

Can I ask for medical certificate online?

Our Sage makes it easy to get a valid medical certificate from anywhere in Australia anytime from 7am - 11pm, every day. Simply head to the Our Sage website to request a medical certificate for 1-2 days. The medical certificate will be verified by a real Australian-registered GP or nurse practitioner. Once verified, the medical certificate will be sent directly to your email within the hour.

If you need a medical certificate for 3-4 days, over a telehealth consult, the GP will assess your symptoms, medical history and any other relevant details and determine if you are eligible for a medical certificate. If you are, the certificate will be sent directly to your email address or Our Sage app.

At Our Sage, we can provide medical certificates for:

  • Work
  • School
  • University
  • Childcare
  • Centrelink

What shoud I do before speaking to a healthcare professional?

Ensure your phone is charged and not set to silent before your healthcare professional calls and find a quiet spot, free from distractions and noise so you can focus on the conversation.

When you’re speaking to the healthcare professional, make sure to clearly describe your symptoms and how they are impacting your ability to travel, work, or attend school. With Our Sage you can request a medical certificate for yourself or for someone that you provide care for, such as dependant children. If the certificate is for a dependant, make sure you request the medical certificate on behalf of them.

It’s important to note that some conditions may require further testing or an in-person consultation before a medical certificate can be issued. If this is the case, your healthcare professional advise you accordingly and will be able to make the appropriate referrals where necessary.

*Medical certificates are issued subject to the clinical opinion of the consulting healthcare professional.
